What is Canadian citizenship by grant?

For many clients, this service is about applying for Canadian citizenship by grant, which is the process for eligible permanent residents who want to become citizens after living in Canada long enough and meeting the legal requirements.

What is citizenship by descent?

Some people may already be a Canadian citizen because they were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent, or because their family history may give them a claim to citizenship. This is often called citizenship by descent. These cases can be more detailed because the rules may depend on your parents’ or grandparents’ citizenship status, where and when you were born, and how Canadian citizenship laws apply to your family situation. If you are unsure whether you are already a citizen, we can help you review the facts and understand whether a citizenship application or a citizenship confirmation path may be more appropriate.

How the citizenship process works:

The citizenship process usually begins with checking whether you meet the main eligibility rules, including your permanent resident status, your physical presence in Canada, and whether you need to meet the language and knowledge requirements. If you are exploring citizenship by descent, we first look carefully at your family history, birth details, and your parents’ or grandparents’ citizenship status to see whether there may already be a citizenship link.

Once we confirm which path may apply, we prepare the application carefully and make sure the required forms and supporting documents are complete. After submission, IRCC may request more information, and in grant applications, may invite you to a citizenship test, interview, or, later, a citizenship ceremony.

Key things to know:

  • You generally must be a permanent resident to apply for citizenship by grant.
  • You may also be exploring whether you are already a citizen by descent and simply need proof or confirmation.
  • Citizenship by descent cases can be more complex because they depend on family history and citizenship law.
  • If you are applying by grant, you usually need 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada in the 5 years before applying.
  • If you are between 18 and 54, you usually need to meet the language and citizenship test requirements.
  • Every case is different, so it is important to understand which path fits your situation before moving forward.
