If you have studied in Canada and want to gain Canadian work experience after graduation, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) may be an important next step. This work permit can give eligible graduates the chance to work in Canada after completing a qualifying program, and it can also help you explore future immigration options. I help graduates understand whether they qualify, what documents they need, and how to apply with confidence.
What is a PGWP?
A PGWP is an open work permit that may allow eligible graduates to work for almost any employer in Canada after finishing their studies. It is not tied to one job or one employer, which gives graduates more flexibility as they begin their careers. The length of the PGWP usually depends on the length of your study program and whether your program meets IRCC’s requirements.
General Eligibility Requirements for PGWP
- You must graduate from an eligible designated learning institution (DLI).
- You usually need to provide proof that you have completed your studies, such as a completion letter or an official transcript.
- If you’re applying on or after November 1, 2024, you must provide proof of English or French language skills.
- You must apply within 180 days after you graduate to apply for a PGWP
